The biggest problem with E85 tunes is that they don't automatically adapt to the real ethanol content that comes from the pump. The truth is that the real ethanol content of E85 fuel varies wildly from tank to tank, from pump to pump, and by time of year. This leads to inconsistent performance and potential vehicle harm as vehicles tuned for E85 don't have the ability to sense different ethanol contents and adjust accordingly. This can be dangerous when you don't get the fuel blend you were expecting. E85 tunes start to become an even bigger problem when E85 isn't available where you need to fill up. With a typical E85 tune you need to run the tank so it's completely dry, then pull out a laptop to switch the fuel map when you switch back. And then when you finally leave the station your pump gas tune still won’t be correct until you go through another gas fill-up cycle to completely remove the residual E85 that the fuel pump can’t get out on its own. And if you forget to change maps, running the wrong fuel for your tune can be disastrous and cause major engine damage.
